Interoception, the brain's representation of internal physiological states, involves the detection, interpretation and integration of bodily signals. This lecture will explore the relationship between cardiorespiratory interoception and mental health, examining cognitive biases, distorted sensitivity and impaired insight in mental disorders such as anxiety and depression.

A special focus on cardiac interoception and EEG studies will show applications for mental health interventions. Understanding interoceptive processes provides insights into how body awareness and emotional regulation can be used to manage chronic pain, helping to design interventions that improve interoceptive awareness and reduce pain perception.

Dr. Andrea Zaccaro is a psychologist and PhD in psycho-biology. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the “G. d’Annunzio” University of Chieti-Pescara, Italy. His research activities focus on the psychophysiology of non-ordinary states of consciousness induced by contemplative practices, such as mindfulness and breathing practices (e.g., pranayama), and on the psychophysiological correlates of cardiac and respiratory interoception.
