The lecture will explore relationships between cardio-respiratory interoception and mental health. Interoception, defined as the brain's representation of internal physiological states, encompasses the sensing, interpreting, and integrating of bodily signals. The presentation will examine how interoceptive processes influence mental health, addressing cognitive biases, distorted sensitivity, and impaired insight found in mental health disorders. Special emphasis is given to cardiac interoception, including EEG-based studies, to show their applications in understanding anxiety, depression, alexithymia, and other mental disorders, and to inform mental health interventions.
Dr. Andrea Zaccaro is a psychologist and PhD in psycho-biology. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the “G. d’Annunzio” University of Chieti-Pescara, Italy. His research activities focus on the psychophysiology of non-ordinary states of consciousness induced by contemplative practices, such as mindfulness and breathing practices (e.g., pranayama), and on the psychophysiological correlates of cardiac and respiratory interoception.
