The voluntary slowing down of breath frequency is a powerful aspect of meditative practices and induces strong psychophysiological changes in the brain and body.
The lecture aims to elucidate the psychophysiological mechanisms linking breath control to its positive effects and impact on health and well-being. It will focus on autonomic changes, brain activity and connectivity modifications (assessed with the EEG and fMRI), and cognitive function and emotion regulation improvements.



Dr. Andrea Zaccaro is a psychologist and PhD in psycho-biology. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the “G. d’Annunzio” University of Chieti-Pescara, Italy. His research activities focus on the psychophysiology of non-ordinary states of consciousness induced by contemplative practices, such as mindfulness and breathing practices (e.g., pranayama), and on the psychophysiological correlates of cardiac and respiratory interoception.
